Friends,
This month
we celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem known
as Palm Sunday, the Last Supper that he ate with his disciples,
the Good Friday when he was crucified and the Resurrection
Morning when he rose again from the grave victoriously.
This is well
known as the Passion Week. This
refers to the passion that Christ had to obey his Father.
That is why he was willing to endure the extreme suffering,
brutality and humiliation that led to his death by crucifixion,
one of the most horrific punishments of it's time. It was
his passion to please his Father that drove him past the suffering.
Some of us
make special efforts to observe the days diligently, making
sure we secure our palms from our local churches, take off
from work during the Good Friday celebration (whether we attend
or not), and make sure that if we haven't been to our local
churches since Christmas, we at least attend on Easter Sunday
decked out with our latest "spring wear". (Maundy
Thursday and Sunrise Services are usually optional..).
Others religiously
observe the events with the intention of fulfilling our duty
as Christians ought during this most Holy Week. We frown at
those who take the Passion of the Christ lightly, or at least
not as seriously as we do.
Let us take
our celebration this year as a time to reflect on the risen
Christ and live by his example found in Philippians 2:8 —
“...he humbled himself and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!” Let us, like Jesus be passionate
for pleasing our heavenly Father, not by our death, but rather
by our lives. “Mankind does not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”
